In·lb, kgf·m, and kgf·cm

One foot-pound equals twelve inch-pounds. Electronics and small bolts often quote in·lb: 120 in·lb = 10 ft·lb ≈ 13.6 N·m. To convert in·lb to N·m, multiply by 0.112985, or convert to ft·lb first by dividing by 12.

Torque vs force — and common mistakes

Torque is force times perpendicular lever arm (τ = F × r). One hundred lbf at a two-foot radius equals 200 ft·lb of torque — but 100 lbf alone is not torque. Convert lbf to N on the Force Converter; convert completed torque values here.

What this torque converter is not

  • Centrifuge RCF ↔ RPM needs rotor radius (RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × r × RPM²) — use a dedicated centrifuge calculator.
  • Horsepower from torque needs angular speed: hp ≈ T × RPM / 5252 for ft·lb — RPM is required, not unit conversion alone.

  • Capstan or winch torque from line tension depends on drum diameter (T = F × r).
