Volume converter — liters, cubic meters, cups, and gallons

Volume measures capacity — how much space a liquid or bulk material occupies. This converter translates between metric, US customary, and UK imperial units. Every value normalizes through liters, the SI-derived unit for liquid and dry bulk measure, so you can move from cooking cups to shipping CBM, or from milliliters to cubic feet, in one step.

Enter a number, pick From and To, and read the result. No upload; all math runs in your browser.

Cubic centimeters, liters, and milliliters

One cubic centimeter (cm³) equals exactly 1 milliliter. That identity drives most lab and kitchen conversions: divide cm³ by 1,000 to get liters, or multiply liters by 1,000 to get cm³.

Reverse: 1 L = 1,000 cm³ = 1,000 mL. A 1 cm × 1 cm × 1 cm cube holds 1 mL of water at room temperature. To convert milliliters to liters, divide mL by 1,000. Small recipe amounts like 40 mL, 180 mL, or 250 mL convert to cups using the US cup factor below.

Cubic meters, CBM, and liter ↔ m³

CBM (cubic meter, m³) is freight and construction shorthand. 1 m³ = 1,000 liters. To convert m³ to liters, multiply by 1,000. To convert liters to m³, divide by 1,000.

Finer steps: divide cm³ by 1,000,000 to get m³ (1 cm³ = 0.000001 m³). Reverse m³ to cm³ multiplies by 10⁶. Cubic centimeter and cubic meter conversions follow powers of ten.

Converting linear metres to cubic metres is not a direct operation — you need three dimensions (length × width × height in meters). A room calculator multiplies those edges; this tool converts the resulting m³ to liters, gallons, or cubic feet.

Cubic feet, cubic inches, and CBM ↔ CFT

US shipping and HVAC often use cubic feet (cu ft, cft). 1 ft³ ≈ 28.317 liters and 1 m³ ≈ 35.315 ft³. To convert CBM to cubic feet, multiply m³ by 35.315.

Cubic inches to cubic feet: divide in³ by 1,728 (12³). 25 ft³ = 43,200 in³. Cubic inches to cubic centimeters: 1 in³ = 16.387 cm³. Cubic feet to cubic inches multiplies by 1,728.

To calculate CBM from millimetre dimensions on a carton: convert mm → m (÷ 1,000 per edge), multiply length × width × height for m³, then read liters or ft³ here. When converting inch dimensions, convert inches → meters first, then cube — do not cube the inch-to-meter factor incorrectly.

Cups, milliliters, and US kitchen measures

US legal cup = 236.588 mL (often rounded 237 mL). To convert cups to milliliters, multiply cups by 236.588. 4 cups ≈ 946 mL — one US quart.

To convert milliliters to cups, divide mL by 236.588. Examples: 500 mL ≈ 2.11 cups · 200 mL ≈ 0.85 cups · 25 mL ≈ 0.11 cups. One US pint = 473.176473 milliliters exactly.

About 4.227 US cups fit in one liter. Metric recipes using 250 mL cups differ slightly — check which cup standard the author used before scaling a recipe.

Kiloliters, barrels, and large-scale volume

1 kiloliter (kL) = 1,000 L = 1 m³. Tanks, pools, and industrial batches use kL or m³ interchangeably for water-equivalent capacity.

One US petroleum barrel (bbl) ≈ 158.99 liters. Oil and chemical specs often quote bbl; convert to liters for metric compliance.

At the extreme end of the metric scale, an exaliter (EL) is 10¹⁸ liters — a theoretical unit for planetary water volumes, not everyday use. This converter focuses on practical kitchen through shipping sizes (µL to m³).

Volume vs weight — grams, mL, and kg

Converting volume to weight (or weight to volume) requires density. Mass = volume × density. Water at room temperature: 1 mL ≈ 1 g — so grams and milliliters match for water only.

Honey, oil, and flour differ significantly. This tool converts capacity units to other capacity units — not mass. For ingredient-specific grams ↔ milliliters, use the Kitchen & Cooking converter.

Converting CBM to metric tons needs material density — cubic metres alone is not enough to determine weight.

Area vs volume — common mistakes

Volume conversion follows one rule: normalize to liters, then express in the target unit. That handles liters, gallons, bushels, and cubic feet uniformly.

Area and volume are different dimensions. Converting square feet to cubic feet is not valid without a third dimension (height). Multiply floor area (ft²) by height (ft) to get ft³, then convert ft³ here.

US and UK gallons differ (~3.785 L vs ~4.546 L) — always pick the correct gallon type for fuel economy, recipes, and import documents.

Step-by-step conversion examples

cm³ → L: 2,500 cm³ ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 L

m³ → L: 0.5 m³ × 1,000 = 500 L

CBM → ft³: 1 m³ × 35.315 = 35.32 ft³

Cups → mL: 4 cups × 236.588 = 946.4 mL

cm³ equals mL

One cubic centimeter is one milliliter by definition — use either unit for the same numeric capacity.

Volume ≠ weight

Converting liters to kg needs density. Water is 1 kg/L; other liquids differ. Use Kitchen converter for ingredients.
