Mathematical / technical context

Base unit: liter (L). 1 m³ = 1,000 L · 1 cm³ = 1 mL = 0.001 L · 1 ft³ ≈ 28.317 L

VB = V × factorA / factorB · 1 US cup = 236.588 mL · 1 US gal = 3.785 L

Step-by-step conversion examples

cm³ → L: 2,500 cm³ ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 L

m³ → L: 0.5 m³ × 1,000 = 500 L

CBM → ft³: 1 m³ × 35.315 = 35.32 ft³

Cups → mL: 4 cups × 236.588 = 946.4 mL

Complete guide to volume conversion & unit charts

Volume converter — liters, cubic meters, cups, and gallons

A volume converter translates capacity between metric, US customary, and UK imperial units. This calculator normalizes every value through liters — the SI-derived unit for liquid and dry bulk measure — so you can move from cooking cups to shipping CBM, or from milliliters to cubic feet, in one step.

Use it as a live volume conversion chart or conversion table for volume: enter a number, pick From and To, read the result. No upload; all math runs in your browser.

Cubic centimeters, liters, and milliliters

One cubic centimeter (cm³) equals exactly 1 milliliter. That identity drives most lab and kitchen conversions: cubic centimeter to liter, convert cubic centimeter to liter, cm3 to l, and convert cm3 to litres all divide cm³ by 1,000 (or use the cubic centimeter converter above).

Reverse: l to cm3, litres to cm3, and conversion of litres to cm3 multiply liters by 1,000. Cubic centimeters to ml is 1:1. A 1 centimeter cube (1 cm × 1 cm × 1 cm) holds 1 mL of water at room temperature.

Convert milliliters to liters: divide mL by 1,000. Milliliter conversion also covers convert ml to microliter (1 mL = 1,000 µL) and small recipe amounts like 40 mL, 180 mL, or 250 mL to cups.

Cubic meters, CBM, and liter ↔ m³

CBM (cubic meter, m³) is freight and construction shorthand. 1 m³ = 1,000 liters. Convert m3 to litre, convert cubic metres to litres, and converting litres to m3 use that factor. Convert litres to cubic metres: divide liters by 1,000.

Finer steps: cm cube to m cube, cubic cm to cubic m, convert cm3 to m3, and cm3 to m3 calculator — divide cm³ by 1,000,000 (or use 1 cm3 to m3 = 0.000001 m³). Reverse m3 to cm3 multiplies by 10⁶. Cubic centimeter to cubic meter and cubic meter to cubic centimeter follow the same powers of ten.

Metres to cubic metres is not a direct conversion — you need three dimensions (length × width × height in meters). A cu meter calculator multiplies those edges; this tool converts the resulting m³ to liters, gallons, or cubic feet.

Cubic feet, cubic inches, and CBM ↔ CFT

US shipping and HVAC often use cubic feet (cu ft, cft). 1 ft³ ≈ 28.317 liters and 1 m³ ≈ 35.315 ft³. Convert cbm to cft and cubic feet to cbm calculator multiply or divide by 35.315. M3 to cubic feet uses the same factor.

Cubic inches to cubic feet: divide in³ by 1,728 (12³). Convert cubic inch to cubic feet — 25 ft³ = 43,200 in³. Cubic inches to cubic centimeters: 1 in³ = 16.387 cm³. Cu ft to cu inch multiplies by 1,728.

Calculate cbm from mm for cartons: convert mm → m (÷ 1,000 per edge), multiply L × W × H for m³, then read liters or ft³ here. A cbm calculator in inches converts inches → meters first, then cubes — do not cube the inch-to-meter factor twice incorrectly.

Cups, milliliters, and US kitchen measures

US legal cup = 236.588 mL (often rounded 237 mL). Milliliters in one cup ≈ 237. Cups to milliliters, convert cup to milliliters, and cups into milliliters multiply cups by 236.588. 4 cups to milliliters ≈ 946 mL — one US quart.

Convert milliliters to cups divides mL by 236.588. Examples: 500 milliliters to cups ≈ 2.11 cups · 200 mL to cups ≈ 0.85 · 25 mL to cups ≈ 0.11. One US pint = 473.176473 milliliters exactly. A cup milliliter converter handles both directions in the unit dropdown.

Liters per US cup: about 4.227 cups per liter (4.22675284 US cups per some references). Metric recipes using 250 mL cups differ slightly — check which cup standard the author used.

Kiloliters, barrels, and large-scale volume

Kiloliter chart entries start at 1 kL = 1,000 L = 1 m³. Tanks, pools, and industrial batches use kL or m³ interchangeably for water-equivalent capacity.

Conversion of barrel to litre: one US petroleum barrel (bbl) ≈ 158.99 liters. Oil and chemical specs often quote bbl; convert to liters for metric compliance.

At the extreme end of the metric scale, an exaliter (EL) is 10¹⁸ liters — a theoretical unit for planetary water volumes, not everyday use. This converter focuses on practical kitchen through shipping sizes (µL to m³).

Volume vs weight — grams, mL, and kg

Conversion of volume into weight, volume to kg converter, kg to volume converter, and convert grams to milliliters require density. Mass = volume × density. Water at room temperature: 1 mL ≈ 1 g — so a grams to milliliters calculator or 50ml to grams converter works for water only.

Honey, oil, and flour differ. This tool converts volume to volume conversion and liters to volume conversion within capacity units — not mass. For ingredient-specific g ↔ mL, use the Kitchen & Cooking converter. Milliliter to milligrams converter is a mass calculation (needs density), not pure volume math.

Convert cbm to mt or convert m3 to mt (metric tons) needs material density — CBM alone is not enough.

Conversion of units for volume — quick reference mindset

Conversion of units for volume follows one rule: normalize to liters, then express in the target unit. That handles conversion volume to liters, gallons, bushels, and cubic feet uniformly.

Not supported here (different dimensions): sq ft to cu ft, cu ft to sq ft calculator, or meter cube to meter square — area needs two lengths; volume needs three. Multiply floor area (ft²) by height (ft) to get ft³, then convert ft³ here.

US vs UK gallons differ (~3.785 L vs ~4.546 L) — always pick the correct gallon type for fuel economy, recipes, and import documents.

Detailed guide

cm³ equals mL

One cubic centimeter is one milliliter by definition — use either unit for the same numeric capacity.

Volume ≠ weight

Converting liters to kg needs density. Water is 1 kg/L; other liquids differ. Use Kitchen converter for ingredients.
